The Dyson AM09, also known as the Hot+Cool™ Jet Focus fan heater, is a bladeless fan designed for both hot and cold weather. Dyson US (n.d.) states that the AM09 is built with ceramic plates and the Air Multiplier™ technology for heating and cooling respectively. According to Salisbury’s Appliances (2024), the Air Multiplier™ technology lets the fan dispense smooth air 15 times faster, even without spinning parts. Furthermore, it does not have any exposed heating parts. This means that the fan is safe, as the features mentioned help prevent injuries and accidents (Engel, 2024). The AM09 was awarded a “Quiet Mark” distinction from the Noise Abatement Society as it is quieter than previous models due to the smooth airflow. The fan also offers users 10 strength settings (Gibbs, 2015) and can be adjusted using a remote control, which is curved and magnetised to be stored neatly on the fan. Lastly, it can be switched off with a sleep timer of predetermined intervals, ranging from 15 minutes to 9 hours (Dyson US, n.d.)

This paper argues that the Dyson AM09 has versatile functionality to serve a wide range of uses and better performance than others, making it a great innovative product although pricier than its competitors.

The Dyson AM09 has versatile functionality due to its wide range of uses. Its versatile design makes it usable in different weather and household types. The AM09 can function in weather ranging from hot summers to cold winters as it has been designed with ceramic plates and the Air Multiplier™ technology to warm and cool users respectively (Dyson US, n.d.). It has safety features that make it suitable for households with children and pets as it can turn off automatically when knocked over and emits hot air that does not burn to touch (Lynch, 2019) due to the lack of exposing heating parts (Salisbury’s Appliances, 2024). Additionally, its sleep timer is designed to be set for intervals between 15 minutes and 9 hours (Dyson US, n.d.). Lynch (2019) states that its compact size, standing around 60cm tall, allows it to serve as both a desk fan and a stand fan. Therefore, the wide range of uses that AM09 incorporates into its design makes it a standout, setting the benchmark for bladeless fan heater innovation.  

The Dyson AM09's design enhances its performance, making it superior to other fans on the market. Compared to other fan heater models, it’s safer to clean, quieter, offers better speed control, is lighter and includes remote control features. Given such enhanced performance, the AM09 delivers a better user experience and value for money to the users. Its bladeless structure, powered by Air Multiplier™ technology, delivers smooth airflow up to 15 times faster than surrounding air. The absence of spinning blades makes it safer and easier to clean than traditional fans with blades (Salisbury’s Appliances, 2024). According to Gibbs (2015), its “Quiet Mark” distinction is awarded by the Noise Abatement Society as it is quieter compared to earlier models. With 10 speed settings, it surpasses competitors like the Shark FlexBreeze and Duronic pedestal fans, which have 8 and 3 settings respectively (Grogan, 2024). It also comes with a magnetic remote control for added convenience and easy storage unlike many other fans (Dyson US, n.d.). Weighing just 2.68 kg, it is significantly lighter than competitors like the Vortex Air™ Cleanse and Shark FlexBreeze, both of which weigh over 5 kg (Grogan, 2024). Hence, these design elements contribute to the AM09’s superior performance.

However, the Dyson AM09 is more expensive than its competition. Priced at around US$469 (Dyson US, n.d.), it is nearly double the price of the Vortex Air™ Cleanse, which costs US$236.17 (Vortex Air, n.d.) and has similar features as the AM09. Users seeking a budget option for heating might consider the Lasko 754200 heater, priced at just US$33 (Franke, 2022). Despite the huge price difference, the AM09 provides both heating and cooling functions, whereas the Lasko 754200 is limited to heating. In terms of performance, the AM09 heats a room to 70°F in 10 minutes and 75°F in 45 minutes, whereas the Lasko 754200 takes 30 minutes and an hour, respectively (Crist, 2015). Despite its higher expense which makes it a less attractive and viable option for many users, Dyson’s reputation for innovation and quality gives the AM09 an edge (Shastri, 2023).

In conclusion, the Dyson AM09’s versatility and superior performance outweigh its high cost. Its wide range of functions, innovative design, and excellent performance make it a valuable product. Its popularity is evident from the thousands of units sold on platforms like Amazon and eBay (Amazon, n.d.; eBay, n.d.). Despite the price, the Dyson AM09 stands out as a high-quality, innovative fan.
